GICUMBI: INCREASE FOREST PRODUCTIVITY ENHANCEMENT THROUGH REHABILITATION PROJECT
The “Increase Forest Productivity Through Forest Rehabilitation in Gicumbi District” project, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and managed by the Rwanda Green Fund (RGF) was launched in March 2024 with a mission to restore 500 hectares of degraded forest. EPECOTGE Ltd, a key partner, is spearheading this initiative, aiming to rejuvenate these vital ecosystems for over 15 months.
This project is currently under implementation. The overarching goal of this initiative is to rehabilitate and sustainably manage degraded forests in Gicumbi District, aiming to increase tree cover and forest productivity while restoring vital ecosystem services. The project strategy integrates capacity building and technical support to implement the Private Forest Management Unit (PFMU) approach.

EPECOTGE Ltd has been tasked with rehabilitating 500 hectares of community-degraded forests over a 15-month period. To date, approximately 90% of the required activities have been completed. These include seedling production, trench excavation, hole digging, and tree planting. The full 500 hectares across eight sectors in Gicumbi District have now been planted, and maintenance activities are ongoing in accordance with technical specifications to ensure the long-term sustainability and success of the rehabilitated forest areas.
