Restoring Green: A Journey of Rehabilitating Forests in Gicumbi District

In the scenic northern highlands of Rwanda lies Gicumbi District, a region once thriving with lush, vibrant forests. However, over time, these forested areas became shadowed by degradation and deforestation, a result of over-exploitation and environmental strain. In response to this pressing challenge, a transformative project has begun, breathing new life into Gicumbi’s landscapes.

A Vision for Renewal

The “Increase Forest Productivity Through Forest Rehabilitation in Gicumbi District” project, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and managed by the Rwanda Green Fund (RGF) was launched in March 2024 with a mission to restore 500 hectares of degraded forest. EPECOTGE Ltd, a key partner, is spearheading this initiative, aiming to rejuvenate these vital ecosystems over 15 months.

The journey commenced with a comprehensive approach to revitalize the forest. The first steps involved identifying the affected areas and the local beneficiaries who would play a crucial role in this endeavor. With collaboration from local authorities and FONERWA staff, 500 hectares across eight sectors in Gicumbi were earmarked for rehabilitation.

Transformative Actions

The project’s approach is as careful as it is impactful. The initial phase focused on on-site preparation, which included clearing away invasive vegetation, removing old tree stumps, and excavating trenches. These trenches, carefully designed and constructed, are essential for controlling soil erosion and managing water flow, safeguarding the newly planted areas.

At the heart of this effort, a nursery was established to grow high-quality seedlings. These young trees are set to be planted in October 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the project. The nursery not only supports reforestation but also represents a beacon of hope for the rejuvenation of Gicumbi’s forests.

Engaging the Community

Understanding that sustainable forest management goes beyond planting trees, the project has been actively engaging with the local community. Awareness campaigns and mobilization efforts have educated forest owners and beneficiaries about the importance of sustainable practices. These campaigns are designed to change attitudes, address the issues of over-exploitation, and promote the establishment of Private Forest Management Units (PFMUs).

Through these efforts, the project has not only worked on the environment but has also fostered social cohesion. Community members have embraced the new approach to forest management, which has created approximately 765 temporary green jobs, providing a significant boost to local livelihoods.

A Bright Future Ahead

As of August 2024, the project has made remarkable strides, with site preparation, trench excavation, and nursery establishment progressing smoothly. The overall completion stands at 48%, with the team on track to achieve the project’s objectives. The restored forests are expected to bring numerous benefits, from enhanced tree cover and improved ecosystem services to increased community resilience and economic opportunities.

The “Increase Forest Productivity Through Forest Rehabilitation in Gicumbi District” project is a testament to the power of collaborative efforts in environmental restoration. It represents not just the reawakening of Gicumbi’s forests but also a step toward a more sustainable and harmonious relationship between communities and their natural surroundings. As we move forward, the project continues to inspire hope and promise for a greener, more resilient future.
